Harry Clarke

Harry CLARKE (1889–1931) was born in North Frederick Street, Dublin, where his father, Joshua had a church decorating business and stained glass studio. He was apprenticed in 1905 for 5 years to his father's business, while attending schools of art in Dublin and London for periods in between. By 1914 he had studied, exhibited, won a travelling studentship, and travelled to Paris and Chartres. His first stained glass commission was to design windows for the Honan Chapel in UCC. He also worked as a book illustrator, illustrating Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, Goethe's Faust, and books of poetry. Between 1917 and 1931, in spite of ill health, he carried out many commissions for churches in Ireland, Great Britain and elsewhere. One of his most famous works is the Geneva Window, commissioned in 1927 by the state for the International Labour Building of the United Nations, which shows scenes from the works of contemporary Irish writers. He was elected a member of the RHA in 1925. In 1930 he established the Harry Clarke Studios at 33 North Frederick Street. He died in 1931 in Coire, Switzerland on his way back to Ireland from Davos, Switzerland where he had been sent by his doctors to fight his tuberculosis.

17 churches with Clarke stained glass windows have been identified in Mayo. The Adoration of the Magi window in Kilmaine was designed and executed by Harry Clarke himself in 1925/26. The windows in Ballinrobe, Roundfort and Newport were conceived and designed by Harry Clarke and executed by his studio under his close supervision. The Last Judgement (1931) window in St. Patrick’s Church in Newport is said to be Harry Clarke’s most magnificent window and the last window designed by him. Other churches in the county with windows created and designed by the Clarke studios during the 1920s, under Harry’s supervision include Ballindine, Claremorris, Cong and Knock.
